Paul - yes, the NI Assembly is elected using STV. As far as I'm aware that's the only place in the UK where STV is used at the moment.

Not sure what the thinking behind its use in NI was, when the Scottish Parliament is elected using the much less desirable Additional Member System; it may have been designed to bring the Assembly elections in line with the Republic of Ireland's electoral system, which is also based on STV, I guess.

I'm pretty sure the elections for the Northern Ireland Assembly use STV rather than FPTP.

An excellent piece showing why it is so important to vote.

I always make a point to vote in any election (either local or national) and even when I've been out of the country I've voted by post.

But this election really is different as it finally gives us a chance to change the system away from confront to cooperation.

Let us just hope that in the event of a hung parliament our politicians decide they can actually work together and we don't end up repeating the process in a few months.

PS I should say that while in the past I have voted for a variety of different parties, I'm not a supporter of either Labour or the Conservatives.
